Selous Game Reserve is one the largest faunal reserves in the world covering 50,000 square kilometers. Much of the park is reserved for game hunting but there is a tourist area near the Rufiji River to go on a game safari. The park habitats vary including grasslands, savanna, wetlands, and woodlands with beautiful views of the Rufiji River and Stiegler Gorge. This is a very popular tourist destination and is a must-see if you are planning to travel to Southern Tanzania.
You can see most of the typical animals including elephants, black rhinos, hippos, lions, African wild dogs, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, crocodiles, and more. Selous has the largest number of animals in any other African game reserve or national park. However, because the game reserve is so large, the density of animals is not as high as in some of the parks in Northern Tanzania.
Selous is inaccessible during the rainy season so it is best to visit during the dry season (June – Oct and Jan – Feb).
