Udzungwa Mountains National Park covers 1,990 square kilometers of tropical rainforest, mountain forest, woodlands, grasslands, and steppe. It has the second largest biodiversity of a national park in Africa with 2500 plant species, over 400 bird species, and 6 primate species. The park is only accessible by foot with a variety of different hikes available from 1 hour to a 6-day camping trek. You can reach Sanje Waterfall (170m) in about 4 hours and enjoy a swim in the waterfall plunge pools. If you are traveling on the Southern Circuit, this is a great one-day activity.
Six primate species have been recorded with two species, the Iringa Red Colobus and the Sanje Crested Mangabey, only found in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
You can visit at any time of the year, but be prepared for rain.
