Mahale Mountains National Park contains part of the Mahale Mountains located in Western Tanzania. It a protected area for chimpanzees, like Gombe National Park, and the only place where chimpanzees and lions co-exist. You can only access the park by boat.
Mahale is famous for its chimpanzees but is also home to other primates as well as smaller mammals such as bushbabies and bush pigs. You can also see hippos and crocodiles via boat. There are over 230 species of birds.
The park is open all year but is best to visit during the dry season from May – October.
